Which kit is right for you?

Baking your first loaf: the Essential Sourdough Starter Kit (£30) has the starter plus the three tools you need to mix, shape and score. You can add bannetons later.

Want the full setup, or buying a gift: the Ultimate Sourdough Starter Kit (£50) adds two bannetons for proofing, a dough whisk and clean-up cloths. It's everything needed for bakery-style loaves.

Already have a starter: choose the Essential Accessories (£15) or the Ultimate Accessory Bundle (£40).

Why a live starter?

A live starter is ready to feed the moment it arrives, and is usually bubbly and ready to bake with within a day. A dried starter has to be revived over several feeds before it's strong enough to raise a loaf. Every Get Sourdough starter is fed daily before it's sent, so it arrives active.

Sourdough starter kit FAQs

What is in a sourdough starter kit?

Get Sourdough's Essential Starter Kit contains a live Original Sourdough Starter (150g), a bread lame with five blades, a stainless steel bench scraper and a plastic bowl scraper. The Ultimate Starter Kit adds two oval bannetons with linen liners, a Danish dough whisk and two reusable clean-up cloths.

Is a sourdough starter kit a good gift?

Yes. A Get Sourdough kit lets someone bake their first loaf within days of opening it. If you're giving it later, keep the starter in the fridge for up to three days and hand it over then; the recipient feeds it when they open it. If you're not sure what they need, a gift card lets them choose.

How long does a live starter take to arrive?

Get Sourdough ships starters Monday to Thursday by Royal Mail, and they usually arrive within 48 hours. Starters are sent at 40% hydration so they travel well.

Do I need a kit or just a starter?

If you already have a lame and scrapers, a starter on its own (£15) is all you need. If you're starting from scratch, the Essential kit saves £5 and the Ultimate kit saves £19 compared with buying each item separately.

How do I look after the starter when it arrives?

Feed it as soon as it arrives (the first feed is in the jar) and leave it at room temperature until it doubles. Our starter care guide covers feeding, storing and reviving it.
